Wednesday Competition

Monday 21/12/15:  North Adelaide

Five starters in beautiful 25C conditions which, according to Pring, were a true test of golf identifying the best golfers.  With only small prizemoney on offer, Damien was always going to save himself (and his handicap) for a larger pot.

Front nine:    Pring (23), from Whicker (18)
Back nine:     Pring & Methofer (18)
Overall:         Pring (41), daylight second, Whicker & Methofer (32)

Birdies:
Greg:            Par 3 fifth

Four point holes:
Phil:          Temporary par 4 hole 15A

Next week:    Lady Bay - Tuesday (contact Bronte)
North Adelaide - Wednesday 10.30 if not too hot.

Wednesday Competition

16/12/15:   North Adelaide

A day for only the hardiest souls - forecast 39C, but reached 41C.   A 9.20 am tee meant beers by 1.00 pm for the 3 starters (Crathern, Batty & Methofer).   Pretty reasonable scores for what was a hot, but not stifling round.

Front:      Phil (19)
Back:      Kevin (21) from Bob (17)
Overall:   Kevin (34) from Phil (33) & Bob (31)

Four point holes:
Phil:    par 5 second
Bob:   par 3 fifteenth.

Next week:      Monday 10.30 am  (to avoid hot weather on Wednesday)

Wednesday Competition

09/12/15:  North Adelaide

Eight starters on another perfect day for golf - about 25C and sunny with a faint breeze.   Very good conditions and scores, with every player exceeded 30 points.   Pring and Crathern played well, their team surprisingly sneaking in over the Boyle/Whicker combination (with Don in no doubt as to who let his team down).  Bob Batty had his best score to date.

Front nine:      Batty, Gordge, Pring & Boyle (18), Beggs (17), Mensforth (16)
Back nine:      Crathern (25) from Pring (21), Whicker (19), Batty (18), Beggs (17)
Overall:          Pring & Crathern (39) from Batty (36), Gordge & Beggs (34), Boyle & Whicker (33), Mensforth (30)

Birdies:
Boyle:         Par 4 tenth (a superb 3 wood approach after a deliberately short drive)
Gordge:      Par 5 seventh

Four point holes;
Batty:        Par 3 fifteenth
Crathern:  Par 4 fourteenth
Pring:       Par 4 seventeenth

Eclectic Holes:
Boyle:       tenth and fourteenth
Crathern:  eleventh
Gordge:    seventh
Batty:       eighteenth

Next week:   North Adelaide - 10.30 am tee

Echunga and EET Singles Final results

06/12/15:    Echunga

Hot - damn hot for the twelve starters, but the early tee time and cloud cover made it just bearable.  Reached 41.5 C after we finished.

EET Singles Final:
Steve White continued his outstanding recent form with a blistering front nine (20 points) to triumph over Kevin Crathern.   It's a bit hard to win in match play when your opponent scores 37 stableford points.   Well done to Steve.
Surprisingly, the 2015 Singles title was actually won during 2015 - well done to all.

Sunday Competition results:
Well done to:
Bronte Milde & Steve White:            37 points (Bronte on  a countback of course)
Helen Cooper & Greg Whicker        34
Jenny Wellman & David Oreo          31
Lots of really good golfers on 29

Birdies:
Whicker:     par 3 second, par 4 thirteenth and par 4 fifteenth

Four point holes:
Helen:      par 4 holes -  fifth, eighth and sixteenth

Long drives:
Helen and Ross

NTPs:
Greg

Wednesday Competition

02/12/15:  North Adelaide

Eight starters on a perfect day - 25C and sunny with a slight, variable breeze.  Course in very good condition with the greens quite quick (for Nth Adelaide).

Fairly forgettable golf all round, with the back nine scores generally poor.

Front nine:     Pring (19), from Mensforth (18), Crathern & Methofer (17)
Back nine:     Gordge (20), Crathern & Methofer (15)
Overall:         Pring (33) from Crathern & Methofer (32), Mensforth (30)

Birdie / Eclectic Holes:
Pring - par 5 second.      His third shot was uphill, from long grass with multiple large trees precluding a view of either the green or the flag.  As it finished two feet from the hole, with no apology forthcoming, the score is subject to administrative review.

No other highlights, birdies or four point holes.

Next week:    Wednesday 10.30 am North Adelaide

Wednesday Competition and 2015 Singles Comp Semi Final

EET 2015 Singles Competition - Semi Final

The semi-finals were completed last week when Steve White courageously challenged the reigning Singles Champion (Craig Burrett) on Craig's home course (Thaxted Park) - where Craig has holed in one on almost every hole.

Bronte reports that Steve played a blinder, with a sensational back nine, to progress to the much anticipated Grand Final against Kevin Crathern.    Kevin is happy for the match to be played at the Patawalonga (after his 42 point round last Wednesday) but most likely Echunga will be the venue.

25/11/15:    Patawalonga

Seven starters, with some outstanding performances despite the very strong winds (it was the bushfire day).    Kevin's 27 point back nine was reminiscent of Vin's unforgettable 56 point epic.

Front nine:    Gordge (20), Methofer & Beggs (17), Whicker (16)
Back nine:    Crathern (27), Beggs (23), Gordge (20), Methofer (18) Milde & Whicker (17)
Overall:        Crathern (42), Gordge & Beggs (40), Methofer (35)

Birdies:
Crathern:   par 4 fifteenth
Beggs:       par 4 fifteenth
Whicker:    par 4 eleventh

Four point holes:
Methofer:  par 4 third
Crathern:  par 4 eleventh

Next week:   North Adelaide - 10.30 am tee

Friday, November 20, 2015

Wednesday Competition

18/11/15:   North Adelaide

Seven starters on an absolute stinker of a day with temperatures almost 40C.   Too hot for all but the hardiest (Pring/Whicker wimped it in a cart).    Pring excelled, Crathern respectable, the dog ate the remaining cards.

Front nine:    Pring (20) from Crathern (15)
Back nine:    Crathern (17) from Pring (16)
Overall:        Pring (36) from Crathern (32)

No birdies or eclectic holes
Four point holes:      Crathern:    Temporary 15A par 4 up the hill

Ashbourne highlight:
I forgot to mention Phil Methofer's tee shot on the remarkably difficult par 3 ninth hole at Ashbourne, which is a long (~190 metres) up-hill, dog-leg with the direct route blocked by many very tall gum trees.   Phil simply used a high tee with his one-wood and put the ball within 6 feet for the sixth team birdie in seven holes.    He now refers to it as his "signature hole" although he is reluctant to talk about it, being such a modest guy.

Ashbourne Results

15/11/15:  Ashbourne Ambrose

A good attendance on the most perfect day for our Ashbourne picnic/Ambrose event (24 C, sunny and calm).    Many thanks to all who attended, assisted on the BBQ, supplied prizes (Noel etc), and organised everything (especially Bronte & Peter).

A remarkable performance by the winning team of Phil Methofer, Paul Tatts, Nick Meiers and Eric Kelly.   Their adjusted total of 46.625, with nine birdies and a winning margin of six strokes was just ridiculous - possibly the best result ever for this event.   They birdied six of the last seven holes.  Clearly, this was their second early Xmas present following a recent visit from the Xmas fairy - and no prizes for guessing which part of their anatomy she kissed.

2nd:  52.5 -   The team of Alby, Juy, Scott & Graham
3rd:   53.5 -   The team lead by Rob Lubcke
4th:   54.4 -   The team lead by Jill Thomas, Helen Cooper & Jenice
5th:   55.75 - The team lead by Kevin Crathern

Wednesday Competition & Singles Semi-Final

11/11/15:  North Adelaide

Ten starters on a warm and humid day, with Mr Gordge returning to add some much needed class.   Scores were generally reasonable all round.

EET 2015 Singles Semi-Final

The main event of the day featured Kevin Crathern vs Phil Methofer.   Kevin triumphed with Bronte observing that 'you don't see that quality of match-play very often'.
The Grand Final will be Kevin against the winner of Steve White vs Craig Burrett (should they ever be able to arrange a contest).

Daily Competition

Front nine:      Damien (20 points) from Peter & Greg (17), Bob (16)
Back nine:      Bronte (20) from Bob & Stephen (19), Don & Kevin (18), Peter (17)
Overall:          Bob & Bronte (35) from Peter (34), Kevin (32) Greg & Damien (31), Stephen & Brian (30)

Eclectic holes:
Pring:      3rd (4)
Gordge:  7th (5)

Four point holes:
Pring:      Par 4 third
Damien:  Par 4 first
Bob:        Par 3 fifteenth

Highlight:
Bob Batty's best score ever and first overall win.   Eight 3 pointers and one 4 pointer helped.

Wednesday Competition

05/11/15:  North Adelaide

9 starters on a Thursday to avoid forecast bad weather (that didn't eventuate), featuring the annual guest appearance/donation by Ross.    Misty drizzle for a few minutes, but otherwise pretty good conditions.

Front nine:      Crathern (20) from Whicker & Methofer (17)
Back nine:      Pring (19) from Whicker (18)
Overall:          Crathern (36) from Pring & Whicker (35), Methofer (32)

Birdies:
Whicker:   Par 3 sixth

Four point holes:
Pring:        Par 4 tenth and Par 4 fourteenth
Methofer:  Par 3 sixth

Eclectic holes:
Crathern:   ninth (4)
Pring:         first (4) and fourteenth (4)

Highlights:
(i)   Damien's wallet containing several hundred dollars was found next to the eighteenth green.   Obviously some of his winnings from recent EET competitions.
(ii)  Noel Wellman played Glenelg on Tuesday.   His approach to the eighteenth green continued the EET tradition of landing on the clubhouse roof (the room used that day for a Melbourne Cup luncheon).   A beautiful swing, excellent contact, superb trajectory, just slightly to the right (by 80 metres or so).   Bronte advises that Geoff McCaw received a standing ovation from the Glenelg members for a similar shot some years ago.

Wednesday Competition

28/10/15:  North Adelaide

Seven starters on a lovely day for golf (although a bit humid), featuring a guest appearance by Eddie Zielke and the return of Pringmeister.

Reasonable scores, with the reigning EET Vinnie champion (and Victor C Grade champion) continuing his winning run.   His scrub on the 18th to win the money without any impact on handicap is a lesson to us all.

Front nine:      Pring and Mensforth (19)
Back nine:      Boyle (17)
Overall:          Mensforth (34) from Boyle (32), Pring (31), Crathern & Methofer (30)

Birdies:       Methofer on par 3 sixth

Four point holes:
Pring:          Par 4 seventeenth
Zielke:         Par 4 thirteenth

Team score:  Boyle/Mensforth snuck in over Pring/Methofer

Highlight:     Methofer joined the illustrious club of those crossing 2 major roads with the one shot (a very well struck approach to the 14th green).

Next week:  Wednesday 10.30 am.   Three groups booked due to possible guest appearances by Ross, "Big Kev" and Graeme (from the Barnbougle trip).
Damien will need to adjust his weekly budget to accommodate the extra money.

Friday, October 23, 2015

Wednesday Competition

21/10/15:   North Adelaide

Lovely weather, but very ordinary golf.   Six starters, with Bob leaving after 9 holes on some sort of promise.    No birdies, four point holes, or eclectic improvements.  Fortunately, a number of talented golfers will return next week.

Front nine:    Rod & Greg (15)
Back nine:    Don (17) from Greg (15)
Overall:        Don & Greg (30)

Next Wednesday:     10.30 am North Adelaide

October Road Trip

Nine starters on the October road trip to the South-East, with two nights at Kingston.   Well done to Bronte for all the arrangements which went very smoothly (as expected) and his wonderfully accurate 'form guide'' - listing Damien (the reigning Vinnie holder) as clear favourite.  He will undoubtedly provide a more detailed and eloquent report on the trip - the following is merely a summary with a couple of highlights:

Friday 16/10/15:   Kingston (SE)

Wonderful weather with the course in excellent condition (and some aesthetic upgrades since the previous visit).

Damien demonstrated his clear intent to go back-to-back and the benefit of months of careful handicap management.   Leaders after Day 1 were Damien (34) from Ross (32) and Kevin (31)

No four point holes or birdies.

Highlight:   The group of Steve White, Bronte and Greg found a brown snake next to the flag on the fifteenth green.  It eventually slithered off the green.  As Steve was about to hit his putt, someone called out (falsely) "it's coming back !!!!""    Steve's vertical and lateral movement is remarkable for a man of his age and condition.

Saturday  17/10/15:   Millicent

Another perfect day with the course in its usual excellent condition.  Damien simply stamped his authority over the field with another victory - Damien (33) from Steve & George (31).  These 3 were the Vinny leaders after Day 2, with Damien increasingly confident and cocky by midnight.

Four point holes:
Damien:     Par 4 fourth
Kevin:        Par 5 first

Highlight:   Ross fulfilled Bronte's form guide prediction of an alcohol-fuelled collapse on Day 2

Sunday 18/10/15:   Lake Albert

Another perfect day, with the fairways good, but the greens in very poor condition (not mown after coring and sanding).   Fortunately, this only affected the good putters.

Best on Day 3 were Greg (38) from  Bronte & Kevin (32), George & Steve (31), Ross & Noel (30).   In the team event, the 'average golfers' (Kev/Ross/Greg) destroyed the threesomes of  'good golfers' and 'NAGA candidates'.

Birdies:
Noel:       Par 3 twelfth
Greg:      Par 5 seventh
George:  Par 4 eighth
Steve:     Par 4 eleventh

The tension was palpable as Bronte tallied the final Vinnie scores.    Kevin almost pulled off a miracle, finishing just half a point behind Damien - with George & Steve also on the podium.

In his acceptance speech, Damien asked whether he gets to keep the trophy after he makes it three-in-a-row next trip.  We all wish him well !!!!

Wednesday Comp

14/10/15:  North Adelaide

Only six starters with the cream of the EET on holidays or ill.   Scores were fair/ordinary considering the excellent conditions.

Front nine:   Damien, Rod & Brian (15)
Back nine:   Rod, Brian & Phil (17)
Overall:       Rod & Brian (32) from Phil (30)

Four point holes:
Brian:       Par 4 fourth
Phil:        Par 4 thirteenth

Rod has been officially warned for winning money at his first two attempts

Thursday, October 8, 2015

Wednesday Competition

07/10/15: North Adelaide

Eight starters on a sunny, mild day (21C), with a guest appearance by Rod Ellis (Bronte & Don's mate from Victor).

Reasonable (but not great) scores from most players.
Mensforth (now known as the Victor C Grade Champion) maintained his rich vein of form.  His 100 metre approach shots using a full blooded wood with a 50 metre fade continue to be a source of amazement.  HIs drive from the 12th tee passed through nine trees before finishing in the middle of the fairway.

Front nine:     Greg (18) from Damien (16)
Back nine:      Rod (20) from Phil (19), Brian & Don (18), Damien (16)
Overall:          Rod & Phil (33) from Don & Damien (32), Greg (30)

Four point holes:
Phil:    par 3 sixth and par 3 twelfth (tee shot to 14 inches from flag)
Rod:   par 3 twelfth

Next week:
Wednesday -  10.30 am tee North Adelaide
Tuesday - contact Bronte re possible Thaxted game

Friday, October 2, 2015

Back nine:     Greg (22)  from Damien (17)
Overall:         Greg (40) from Phil & Damien (33), Don (32)

Birdies:
Greg - par 4 fourth and par 3 seventeenth

Four point holes:
Phil  - par 5 seventh

Eight starters on another perfect day - same as last week.

Front nine:     Damien (19) from Don, Bob & Brian (17)
Back nine:     Phil (16) from Bob, Brian and Bronte (15)
Overall:          Damien (33) from Brian (32) and Bronte (30)

Birdies:
Greg:     -  par 5 fifteenth

Four Point Holes:
Damien:  - par 3 fifth, par 5 seventh
Brian   -  par 4 fourth
Phil  -    par 3 sixteenth

Teams:    Damien/Don too good for Bob/Greg

Wednesday Competition - TTG

16/09/15:   Tea Tree Gully

Nine starters plus Rob Lubcke and two mates on a day that had everything !!!    Thunder, lightning, a very brief shower, the threat of drenching rain, plus sunshine and moderate warmth.    First look at Tea Tree Gully for many of us - quite a pleasant course, but the inverted saucer greens minimised the overall scores.    Many thanks to Pring & Lubcke for arranging the event.

Front nine:    Whicker & Pring (16) from Burrett (15)
Back nine:     Milde (16)  from Methofer (14)
Overall:         Milde & Whicker (29)

Best Team:   Milde/Pring from Lubcke/Whciker

Birdies:
Whicker:     Par 5 ninth

Monday, September 14, 2015

Wednesday Competition

08/09/15:   North Adelaide

Five starters on a mild, calm, dry Tuesday - failed to avoid the Koreans, who apparently play slowly Monday to Friday mornings.   Will revert to Wednesdays next week.

Reasonable scores from everyone, but it's hard to beat Damien when he doesn't scrub any hole.

Front nine:       Mensforth (20) from Batty & Crathern (17)
Back nine:       Crathern & Whicker (16)
Overall:           Mensforth (34) from Crathern (33), Whicker (31), Pring (30)

Birdies:                  Whicker (par 4 eleventh)
Eclectic holes:       Mensforth (third)

Next week:     Wednesday - 9.40am tee

Sunday Competition (McCracken) & EET Singles

14/09/15:   McCracken

Fifteen starters on a hot (29C), sunny day with a mild breeze.   Fairways in fairly ordinary condition with the recently cored greens furry and very slow.

EET  Singles Competition 2015 - second round

(i)   Craig Burrett (reigning EET Singles Champion) snuck in over Ken Freestone
(ii)  Phil Methofer over George Cleland on the last hole after a very tight contest.   Phil's success was attributed to his meticulous pre-match preparation, in that he:
-  forgot to bring golf shoes and had to purchase a new pair from the pro-shop
-  played the match with his EET golf shirt inside out (the logo read OK in a mirror)
-  warmed up with a cigarette while George was on the practice fairway
Phil has now overtaken Damien in the EET Alzheimer's award (Damien recently cleaned his car before golf, then left his clubs & buggy in the garage and had to hire everything).

Peter Pring (38 points) dominated the Stableford competition, with daylight second.  Detailed descriptions of each hole were provided during the drive home.  Mere mortals included:

Beggs                         (32)
Milde & Methofer        (31)
Gordge & Townsend  (30)

Long Drive:    Townsend - by a hundred metres
NTPs:             Cleland (on at least two par 3s), Mensforth

Thursday, September 3, 2015

Wednesday Competition

03/09/15:  North Adelaide

Six starters on a cool, overcast, calm Thursday to avoid the downpour yesterday and the slow Koreans.  Found out that slow Koreans play on Thursdays as well.

Two teams of three, with team aggregate score winning.   Pring/Mensforth/Milde murdered Batty/Boyle/Whicker.

Front nine:      Pring (17) from lots with 14
Back nine:      Mensforth & Whicker (20) from Pring (19)
Overall:          Pring (36) from Mensforth & Whicker (34)

Birdies:
Greg:     Par 3 twelfth and par 5 fifteenth

No four point holes:

Next Week:      Tuesday  10.00 am -   Note the switch to Tuesdays !!!!!!!

Thursday, August 27, 2015

Wednesday Competition

Front nine:       Boyle (21) from Mensforth (17) & Pring (16)
Back nine:       Pring, Mensforth & Whicker (16) from Batty & Beggs (15)
Overall:           Boyle (34) from Mensforth (33), Pring (32) & Whicker (31)

Birdies:                     Nil
Four point holes:     B
atty:              Par 3 sixteenth
Quite unexpectedly, the Boyle/Pring combination triumphed over Milde/Whicker

Next Wednesday:    Early start -  9.40 am tee time (to avoid the Koreans)

Wednesday, August 19, 2015

Overall:        Don & Damien (31) from Bob

Four point holes:
Damien:      Par 4 first

Front nine:     Phil (18) from Greg (16), Bronte (15)
Back nine:     Greg (21) from Bronte (16) & Don (15)
Overall:         Greg (37) from Phil & Bronte (31)

Sunday Competition - Barossa Valley & Gawler

Saturday 08/08/15:   Gawler

Fourteen ventured to Nuriootpa Caravan Park for the traditional August weekend trip.
Nice weather - fine, cool, generally sunny and relatively calm conditions, with the course in very good condition (with no sign of mud or slush).

Ten players entered Gawler's Saturday competition, with only George & Bronte (31) and Damien & Dave Bartlett (30) avoiding embarrassment.

2015 EET Singles Comp - first round
After a titanic, long-hitting contest George snuck in over Dave Oreo on the final hole.  Both played well, with Dave fighting back mid-round to even the match.  A couple of excellent shots by George late in the round sealed the win.

Sunday 09/08/15:   Barossa Valley (Nuriootpa)

Sixteen starters on the Sunday, including the four ladies.   Absolutely perfect conditions - probably the best weather all winter, with the course in good condition.
Noel noted in his after-match speech that the conditions were a true test of golf in which the best players prevailed.

Noel                       35 points
Greg                      35
Damien                  30

Long Drive (mens)         Ross, from an unlucky Dave O
Long Drive (ladies)        Kerri
NTP (mens)                   Greg (2)
Ladies winner                Jenny

"VINNIE" trophy for the trip -   Damien Mensforth

Thanks to the Secretary for the arrangements, Sunday breakfast and magnificent weather.

Thursday, August 6, 2015

Wednesday Competition

05/08/15:   North Adelaide

Eight starters on a morning with forecast light rain - it arrived in the form of several brief, light sprinkles.

Due to the heavy course conditions, it was decided to play a two-ball Ambrose - except for a last second decision that Whicker would represent Wellman against Burrett in their long-delayed first round match of the 2015 Singles Comp.     An unfortunate decision by Noel, as he would have had a better chance with a coin toss.   Craig helpfully noted on the first tee that he would have slept a whole lot better if he'd known that he was playing Greg, rather than Noel.  Harsh, but clearly true, as Craig triumphed in a fairly high-quality contest.

The Methofer/Beggs coupling won the Ambrose prizemoney in a close contest.

Next week:   To be advised - just waiting on the weather forecast that currently looks a bit dicky for Wednesday.

Thursday, July 30, 2015

Wednesday Competition

29/07/15:  North Adelaide

Seven starters on a cool (14C), overcast but calm day.    Nothing outstanding, but a return to form by the old fox (Damien) and Pringmeister.

Front nine:      Greg (18) from Peter & Bronte (16)
Back nine:      Damien (19) from Bronte (17)
Overall:           Damien (34) from Bronte (32), Peter (31).   Damien scrubbed the last hole to protect handicap.

Birdies:
Greg:    Par 5 second

Four Point Holes:
Damien:   Par 4 eleventh
Bob:         Par 3 sixth
Phil:         Par 4 ninth

Teams:
Bronte/Damien snuck in over Phil/Greg on the final hole.  It's probably not surprising that, with the match all square after a titanic struggle all day, Bronte's one point on the final hole was enough to win.  Doh !!!!

Next week:    Wednesday, South Course, 10.30 am

Thursday, July 23, 2015

Wednesday Competition

22/07/15:  North Adelaide

Once again, the playing conditions were much better than forecast for the seven starters - mild (~15C), sunny and fairly calm.   The overall scores were very ordinary, undoubtedly due to the absence of several stars (Crathern, Beggs & Gordge).

Front nine:   Greg (16) from Damien & Bronte (15)
Back nine:    Don (17) from Greg (16), Phil (15)
Overall:        Greg (32) from an unlucky Don (31) and Phil (30)

No birdies or four point holes.

As expected, Mensforth/Whicker triumphed over Milde/Pring.    Bronte again requires physiotherapy.

Friday, July 17, 2015

Wednesday Competition

15/07/15:  North Adelaide

Ordinary weather forecast, but turned out OK except for one brief shower.   The only people to get wet were those who took Dave Bartlett's advice that an umbrella wouldn't be needed.

Ten starters, including a guest appearance by the birthday boy (Bartlett) and his mate Alby.  It's always disturbing to realise that Dave represents the next generation of EET.    One of his Phil Walsh jokes was borderline OK, the others were far too early !!!

Front nine:     Bartlett (20 points) from an unlucky Methofer (18), Milde (15)
Back nine:     Beggs (19) from Batty (17), Pring & Whicker (15)
Overall:          Beggs & Methofer (32) from Batty (30)

Birdies:
Batty:     Par 3 sixteenth - a two for 5 points (oh please!!!)

Four point holes:
Methofer:   Par 5 second
Bartlett:      Par 5 second

Next week:      North Adelaide 10.30 am

Monday, July 13, 2015

Sunday Competition - Fleurieu Results

12/07/15:   Fleurieu

Ten hardy souls braved the forecast arctic, wet and blowy conditions.   There were only a couple of very brief sprinkles of rain but the moderate/strong breeze, multiple layers of clothes and damp course made good scores difficult.   Except, of course, for Ross.

Ross played a blinder, scoring 35 points in a round that was really worth about 40 points. It included a penalty on the par 5 seventh after his magnificent drive into the teeth of the breeze.  Unfortunately, it was hit from the ''yellows" about 2 metres ahead of the "whites".  Like the mushroom issue a few weeks ago, R&A rules were scrupulously applied (blame Bronte !!!).

Several really talented golfers tied for second on 26 points.  Quite a few others dreamed of 26 points.

Long drive:     Townsend
NTP:               Pring.     Somewhat surprisingly, Paul Crathern's magnificent tee shot to within 10 feet of the flag was followed by 4 putts for double bogey.

Birdies:
Ross:     Par 3 fifth

Teams:   The White/Mensforth pairing snuck in over Milde/Pring.  Bronte's shoulders now require physiotherapy.

A special mention for Bronte yet again winning the Victor comp ("square" in the par competition on a freezing cold Saturday)

Wednesday Competition

08/07/15:   Thaxted Park

Eight starters at Thaxted (South Course unavailable) on yet another perfect day - about 16C, generally sunny and calm.   The condition of the course is improving, with the greens in very good condition and the fairways reasonable.    Fairly ordinary scores despite the talent assembled.

Front nine:       Brian (18) from Greg (16)
Back nine:       Greg (19) from Bob & Bronte (16)
Overall:            Greg (35) from Brian & Bronte (30)

No birdies

Four Point Holes:
Bob:         Par 4 thirteenth
Stephen:  Par 4 fifth
Phil:         Par 3 eleventh
Brian:       Par 4 ninth and par 3 eleventh

Pairs:
Mensforth/Gordge snuck in over Pring/Batty
As expected, Beggs/Whicker defeated Milde/Methofer

Wednesday Competition

01/07/15:  North Adelaide

Seven starters on a perfect day - mild, sunny and calm.  Reasonable scores given the lack of run on the fairways.   The temporary green will be gone for our next round.

Front nine:    Greg (19 points) from Bronte (15)
Back nine:     Damien (19) from Greg (18), Don (17) & Bronte (15)
Overall:         Greg (37) from Damien (33), Don (31) and Bronte (30)

Birdies:
Don:       Par 3 sixth hole - 40 metre chip from long grass, under a tree, across a sloping green.  Could just see the top of the flag, but "Always a two".
Greg:      Par 4 ninth.

Four Point Holes:
Phil:       Par 4 thirteenth.

Next week:    Likely to be Oakbank about 10.30 am.  Bronte to confirm.

Lake Albert and Murray Bridge Results

Saturday 27/06/15:   Lake Albert, Medindie

Ten starters on a lovely day - mild and generally sunny, with virtually no breeze (well done Bronte).  The course was in excellent condition with the relatively new Santa Anna greens outstanding.    We joined in Lake Albert's par competition, with Ross Townsend winning multiple prizes for NTP/long drive, best looking etc.   Surprisingly, his 'one up' score didn't win a prize.

EET stableford winner was Ross with an impressive 36 points, followed by Steve White & Greg Whicker on 32 points.

Birdies:
Ross:       par 5 third
Kevin:      par 3 fourteenth

Four point holes:
Bob:        par 3 sixth
Worth mentioning Greg's 3-skip 'dambuster' drive across the water on the eleventh.

Sunday 28/06/15:   Murray Bridge

Another perfect day for golf - pretty much identical to Lake Albert.  Fourteen starters with very ordinary scores apart from a couple.

EET Singles Comp - first round:
Steve White snuck in over Greg Whicker.   Greg was four-up after nine, but suffered a very minor (almost imperceptible really) stumble on the back nine to lose on the seventeenth. The four-point back nine set a new low.

Normal Comp:
Ross continued his good form with 32 points, thereby winning the "Vinny" trophy for the weekend.  Steve White scored a respectable 32 points under match play conditions, with Paul Crathern on 30 points.   The rest are currently locked in a room full of mirrors.

NTP and Long Drive:               Greg (obviously on the front nine)

Birdies:
Ross:     par 3 seventeenth
Brian:     par 3 fourth
Phil:        par 4 fourteenth

Four point holes:
Bob:       par 3 fourth
Paul:      par 4 thirteenth
Worth mentioning the "random hole' approach adopted by Kevin's group - went straight from the eighth green to the thirteenth tee and played most of that hole before the light dawned.

Wednesday Competition and EET Singles Comp update

24/06/15:  North Adelaide

The forecast "few showers" didn't arrive, so the ten starters enjoyed a cool (~15C), mainly overcast day with virtually no breeze.    A welcome back from holidays to Brian Beggs, following "seagull" Gordge's return last week.

Singles Competition (second round match)
Kevin Crathern played to handicap to narrowly defeat Don Boyle.   35 stableford points under match play conditions is hard to beat.

Wednesday result:
Front nine:     Methofer (19) from Batty, Crathern & Pring (16)
Back nine:     Whicker (20) from Crathern (19), Methofer (18) &  Pring (16)
Overall:          Methofer (37) from Crathern (35), Whicker (34), Pring (32), Milde (31) & Batty (30)

Birdies:
Milde:         Par 3 twelfth
Crathern:   Par 3 temporary (15A)
Gordge:     Par 3 sixteenth
Whicker:    Par 5 seventh and par 3 twelfth

Four point holes:
Batty:        Par 3 twelfth

Highlight:
Last Sunday, Damien carried out the annual clean of his car.   Surprise, surprise, he then forgot to put his golf clubs back in the car.   He had to hire a set and endure sledging whenever he played a good shot.   Could have saved money by not hiring all those shiny things (irons).

Six starters on a Friday to make use of the better weather and voucher (courtesy Bronte).  Cool (~14C) and calm, in tee shirts when the sun came out.

Front nine:      Greg (18) from Damien, Bronte & Don (16)
Back nine:      Don (20) from Greg (19), Bronte (17)
Overall:           Greg (37) from a desperately unlucky Don (36), Bronte (33).

Birdies:   Nil
Four point holes:
Phil:        Par 4 second
Don:       Par 4 eighteenth - 'always looked a four'

Next week:   North Adelaide - Wed about 10.30 am

Thursday, June 11, 2015

Wednesday Competition

10/06/15:   North Adelaide

Another fine, calm and cool (~14C) day resulted in reasonable scores from most of the eight starters, and quite a few improvements on the eclectic scoreboard.

Stephen Gordge returned from his O/S holiday and promptly won the front nine (after 10 weeks without golf).   Nothing changes !!

Front nine:   Gordge (18) from Pring & Whicker (17)
Back nine:   Pring (18) from Crathern & Whicker (17)
Overall:        Pring (35) from Whicker (34), Gordge & Milde (31)

Birdies:    Nil

Four Point Holes:
Batty:         Par 3 sixteenth
Gordge:    Par 4 eighth
Pring:        Par 4 seventeenth

Team scores:
The Pring/Crathern combination snuck in (1 up) over Gordge/Mensforth
As expected, the undefeated Batty/Whicker team demolished Milde/Methofer

Thursday, June 4, 2015

Wednesday Competition

03/06/15:  North Adelaide

The first Wednesday in winter turned out sunny and mild, with virtually no breeze.   The course is playing long, with little run on the fairways.

Seven starters, with a couple of O/S travellers due home very soon.  Scores were generally solid, rather than good.

Front nine:      Greg (18) from Bronte & Don (16)
Back nine:      Damien & Peter (16)
Overall:           Greg (32) from a very unlucky Don & Damien (31), and Peter (30)

No birdies or four point holes.

As expected, the team of Methofer/Whicker demolished Milde/Boyle.

Wednesday Competition and EET SIngles update

28/05/15:   The Vines (Reynella)

Played at the Vines using vouchers (thanks Peter/Bronte) on a beautiful day.   The forecast downpour occurred just after we finished the round.  We had fine, mild and generally sunny conditions throughout.

Eight starters, with quite reasonable scores all round (given the green slopes are optical illusions).

First Round EET 2015 Singles Result:
Don Boyle snuck in over Peter Pring.   (Don's home course, Peter still with jet lag)

Front nine:    Bronte (19) from Damien (17), Kev & Greg (16)
Back nine:    Don (17) from Bronte (16)
Overall:         Bronte (35)  from Don & Damien (32), Kev & Greg (31)

Birdies:
Kevin:       Par 3 tenth
Damien:   Par 5 fifth -  did anyone witness this ???

Four Point Holes:
Don:    Par 4 twelfth

Next week:   North Adelaide 10.30 am

Wednesday, May 20, 2015

Wednesday Competition

20/05/15:   North Adelaide

The forecast 'few showers' didn't arrive and we had a calm, mild day with the course a little damp after the recent downpour.  That may have contributed to some ordinary scores.

Six of the regulars.   Pring should be back next week.

Whicker took the money (17/18/35) from Methofer (31).

Birdies:    Greg on the par 4 tenth, par 3 twelfth and par 3 #`15A (temporary)

Four Point Holes:   Phil on the par 5 second

Next Wednesday:    The Vines  (using vouchers) - Bronte to confirm and advise tee times

South Lakes and EET Championship Results

17/05/15:  South Lakes

It's impossible to have more perfect weather for golf at Goolwa.  Clear skies, 20C and calm, with the course in very good condition.

Fifteen starters and pretty reasonable scores all round.

Two more matches in the first round of the 2015 EET Singles Comp were completed:
(i)   Kenny continued his red-hot form against Bronte.    24 points on the front nine during match play, with 38 overall - give us a break. !!!!!
(ii)   Ross snuck in over Damien.

Ken Freestone:                                   38 points

NTP:              Damien (a wood to about 2 metres)
Long Drive:   Greg

Eddie:    Par 4 second

Wednesday Competition

13/05/15:  North Adelaide

Turned out to be a lovely autumn day for golf, despite the doubtful forecast.  Sunny and mild at times, overcast and cool for the rest.  Calm conditions.

Just  five starters, with the wealthy regulars still O/S and a couple injured.

Front nine:   Phil & Greg (17)
Back nine:   Kevin (20)
Overall:        Greg (32) from Damien & Kevin (30), Phil & Bronte (29)

Only one highlight - a four point hole for Phil on the par 4 ninth.

06/05/15:   Patawalonga

One very brief sprinkle, otherwise a pleasant autumn day.  Mainly sunny and cool with a light/moderate breeze.  The course is in very good condition.

Eight starters, with reasonable scores all round.

Front nine:   Crathern and Whicker (17)
Back nine:   Boyle (21) from Crathern (17)
Overall:        Boyle and Crathern (34), Whicker (30)

The Batty/Whicker combination remains undefeated, despite a courageous fightback by Zielke/Methofer

Wednesday Competition, EET 2015 Singles

22/04/15:  North Adelaide

Only four starters, with most regulars either on O/S holidays or golf tour.  Damien back in action but not quite match hardened yet.

Phil Methofer and Bob Batty fought out the first battle of the 2015 EET Singles competition -  a high quality match, with Phil starting well,  Bob leading after 13 holes, and Phil  'falling over the line'.

Front nine:   Bob and Phil (20)  - very impressive under match play, from Damien (17)
Back nine:   Don (17) from Phil (16)
Overall:        Phil (36) from Bob (30)

Four point holes:
Bob:      par 4 fourth
Phil:       par 3 fifth  (Phil's 3 for 4 beat Bob's 4 for 3)

29/04/15:  North Adelaide

A lovely autumn day for golf - about 18C, mild and calm.   Nine starters, with:
-   the three really wealthy Wednesday regulars still O/S on holidays
-   the golf tourists back from taming Barnbougle, and
-   guest appearances by Tony Jeffries (the Sydney based, better looking brother of Ocky) and Kevin Sampson (the itinerant, cleverer brother of Ocky).

Unfortunately, remodelling of the 4th green till mid-June means two temporary holes and a reduced course rating of 69 compared to the usual 71.

Front nine:   Kev C and Eddie (19) from Phil (17)
Back nine:   Kev C, Bob (18) from Phil & Tony (17)
Overall:        Kev C (37) from Tony (34), Phil (33) and Greg (30)

Birdies:
Tony:   Par 4 fourteenth
Greg:  Par 4 hole #15A
Kevin Sampson:     Par 3 twelfth.    Possibly the worst tee shot seen on this hole all year - a bladed 8 iron which ran along the ground, down the valley, up the other side and finished 8 feet from the flag.  No apology.
Four point holes:
Phil:    Par 3 fifth and Par 4 ninth

Next week:

Wednesday:   11.40 am  Patawalonga (Note the later tee time)

Thursday, April 9, 2015

Wednesday Competition

08/04/15:  North Adelaide

An excellent day for golf, mild (20C) with a very light breeze.

Only four starters, with most of the EET talent sick, injured or away on holiday.  Scores varied from very ordinary to horrendous.  The 'Milde Doctrine' on 'gimmes', counting every shot and obeying the rules of golf, is clearly having an effect.

As expected, the team of Batty/Whicker proved far too strong for Boyle/Milde.

Front nine:   Batty (16) from Whicker (15)
Back nine:   Whicker (15)
Overall:        Whicker (30)

Four point holes:
Batty:    Par 3 fifth

Next week:   A few regulars will be ripping Barnbougle to shreds, so the numbers at Nth Adelaide will be down.   Mr Pring will confirm tee times with likely starters.
